India’s Tech Kind Azim Premji-Tech Revolution
Over the
years, Azim Premji has received many honors and recognitions, which he believes
are a credit to every person who has contributed to Wipro. Business Week ranked
him among the 30 best entrepreneurs in world history (July 2007). They also
featured him on their cover with the sober 'India's Tech King' (October 2003).
The Financial Times included him on a global list of 25 people who are
"dramatically reshaping the way people live, work or think" and have
done the most to achieve significant and lasting social, political or cultural
change (October 2005, November 2004).
Time listed
him among the 100 most influential people in the world in April 2004 and April
2011, citing his contribution to improving India's public education system,
which serves the underprivileged and disadvantaged. Fortune (August 2003) named
him one of the 25 most powerful business leaders outside the US. Forbes (March
2003) listed him as one of the ten people worldwide with the greatest
"power to affect change". He was named "Business Leader of the
Year 2004" by The Economic Times.
In 2000, the
Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers awarded him its
highest award - Honorary Fellowship. He was awarded the "Global
Vision" award by the US-India Business Council. He is a non-executive
director on the board of the Reserve Bank of India. He is a member of the Prime
Minister's Council for National Integration and for Trade and Industry in
India. He is also a member of the Indo-UK and Indo-France CEO Forums.
In January
2011, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushana, one of the
country's highest civilian honours. He was also conferred the Padma Bhushan in
2005. The French Republic awarded him the "Legion of Honour" in 2011.
In 2001, Premji founded the Azim Premji
Foundation, a non-profit organization with a vision to make a significant
contribution to quality primary education for every child with the aim of building
a fair, just, humane and sustainable society. Premji personally contributed
funds to this foundation. Azim Premji Foundation has reached over 2.5 million
children in over 20,000 schools across India. In October 2006, the Foundation
was awarded Corporate Citizen of the year by The Economic Times. The foundation
is currently in the process of a very significant expansion, including the
establishment of a university and several branch institutions, all aimed at
improving education in India and related development.
